Happy New Year!!! We hope 2016 brings you much happiness and lots of success with your writing! If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution then here’s a handy one: cut out all those exclamation marks!!!!!1!!11!!!
Video transcript follows below:
I read a terribly sad story in the paper the other day. Apparently the RSPCA were called because a group of Hibs players were playing football with a hedgehog they’d found curled up into a ball. By the time the police got there the hedgehog was 3-0 up! HA HA HA HA H
“Scott Fitzgerald said “Cut out all those exclamation marks. An exclamation mark is like laughing at your own joke.”
Wait, what’s that noise? Da-da-dah! The other thing an explanation mark does is it says “insert your own excitement here!” because I’m too crap to do my job and make this exciting.
So those exclamation marks are best avoided. Of course, there are always exceptions: Alexander Solzhenitsyn used them by the bucket load, and the effect is striking.
Thanks for watching and good luck with your writing.
